Professor Donal O’Donoghue is the Registrar of the Royal College of Physicians of London , Consultant Renal Physician at Salford Royal and Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Manchester.

Donal qualified in physiology and medicine from Manchester and trained in internal medicine and nephrology in the East Midlands, Northwest, and Paris where he was a MRC travelling fellow in Edinburgh. He was appointed to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in 1992 and was Clinical Director of Renal Services between 1994 and 2007.

In Manchester, he led the re-organisation of renal services and established the first managed clinical network in England. He was inaugural President of the Multi-Professional British Renal Society. He was National Director of Kidney Care at the Department of Health from 2007-2013, where he oversaw the implementation of the Renal National Service Framework. He was President of The Renal Association 2016-2018. In 2018 Donal was awarded an OBE for services to kidney patients.

In addition to clinical duties at Salford, Donal remains active in training and research. He chairs the Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria Senate and is Medical Director of Health Innovation, Manchester. He is chair of the patient support charity, Kidney Care UK.
