Paul Cockwell is a consultant nephrologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) and professor of nephrology (honorary) at the University of Birmingham. Paul qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1987, trained in medicine in South Wales and Leeds and in nephrology and medicine in the West Midland. He was a clinical research fellow at the University of Birmingham between 1994 and 1997, obtaining a PhD in renal immunology. He has been a consultant in Birmingham since 1999 and during his career to date has held multiple leadership roles at a local, regional, and national level. Paul is the current medical chair of the Kidney Quality Improvement Partnership (KQuIP).

Paul has long-standing research interests (pubmed search ‘Cockwell P’), over the past decade these have predominantly been in chronic kidney disease, and paraproteinaemia and kidney disease. He has recently established a collaboration with the Centre for Patient Reported Outcome Research at the University of Birmingham, focusing on patient reported outcome measures in kidney disease.​
