Introduction

Committee Chair: Dr Bhavna K Pandya

The Equal Opportunities in Nephrology Committee was created as a result of the Renal Association’s commitment to support and develop equality of opportunity in nephrology in the UK. We hope to improve access to mentoring and career advice for nephrologists, and also encourage women in leadership.

Our firm intention is not to be exclusive to any category but to address equal opportunity concerns wherever they arise.

The EON Committee will liaise with and act as a conduit for exchange of ideas between nephrologists from all arenas which may be under- represented at leadership levels, and the RA Council.

We encourage anyone with any queries, requests for advice or suggestions for future initiatives to contact Bhavna Pandya or committee members directly.

The EON Committee holds a lunchtime networking and information session at each annual conference and one or two tele-conferences every year.  At the 2017 annual conference, sessions focused on “Junior doctors contract” and “’Access to the Specialist Register via the equivalence route” were organised.

Recent Activity

“The Equal Opportunities in Nephrology (EON) Committee has been actively involved in promoting mentorship for newly appointed consultants for the past 6 years.  Between July 2012 and December 2016 we identified 150 newly appointed renal consultants across the UK and contacted them offering help and support with finding a mentor. This initiative has received very positive feedback and will hopefully help to nurture successful and productive consultants in the future.

We recently carried out a survey of Non Consultant Grade doctors (NCG) in renal medicine. We are working in collaboration with Renal Association executive team, Royal College of Physicians and British Medical Association to support our Non Consultant Grade Doctors.

We continue to offer support to nephrologists working in the UK who trained abroad.  If anyone desires any support or is interested in helping out with this project please contact Bhavna Pandya.

We are also currently busy building up a network of nephrologists on Facebook. If you would like to be included in this group, please use this link or contact Bhavna Pandya.
