Royal College of Physicians Renal Medicine Symposium 2020

This symposium should be of interest to general practitioners, hospital physicians, intensivists and nephrologists as the topics have been chosen to reflect the many systemic pathologies that may impact on the kidney.

We will hear about management of acute kidney injury from the perspective of the intensivist and learn about novel therapies for hepatorenal syndrome. There will be an update on recent trials in nephrotic syndrome and on exciting new developments in the treatment of amyloidosis. Our very distinguished keynote speaker will focus on the worldwide epidemic of interstitial nephritis, which will be of particular interest to our international attendees.

Nephrology has a proud history of using information technology and national registries to collate large databases. In the age of big data, we will discuss how complex datasets may be used to improve patient care and identify novel therapeutic targets.

It is almost 60 years since the first UK live donor transplant was performed in Edinburgh. We will explore ways to expand the programme to include higher risk recipients. Finally, we will seek the holy grail and learn how Edinburgh scientists are using stem cells to grow kidneys.
