A fully digital Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) 2020

The national Kidney PREM will be collected from across the UK in October this year – online only.

The annual Kidney PREM was postponed in June due to Covid-19. Following discussions with patients, clinicians and researchers, it has been agreed that the 2020 Kidney PREM survey will now-be collected digitally in October. This will ensure patients still have an opportunity to give feedback on their experience, will reduce the burden on the renal work-force, and reduce risk of infection through handing out paper surveys.

We are aware of the potential challenges in delivering a fully digital Kidney PREM, including the need to make sure that it remains accessible to all, and are looking at ways to address this in the run-up to the collection month.

There will be an opportunity for patients to leave free text comments alongside the full Kidney PREM scale in order to recognise and capture the impact of COVID-19 on people’s experience, as well as give units further information on what they can do in response to their patients’ reported experience.

The online Kidney PREM will be available in English, Welsh, Urdu and Gujarati.

Acknowledging that results from the Kidney PREM 2020 may not be comparable to previous years, we hope the data captured will provide a unique data-set which can be used for:

  • Patient-centred quality improvement
  • Research on the impact of COVID-19 on the experience of people living with kidney disease
  • Future planning – by both renal units and national healthcare bodies / charities
  • The Renal Getting It Right First Time initiative
  • Testing the feasibility of online only PREM collection

We will be in touch with renal unit teams and patients shortly with further details.

Thank you for your continued support of this initiative.
