In Memoriam: Professor Gavin Arneil

It is with great sadness we inform you of the passing of Professor Gavin Arneil, founder of the BAPN and our first honorary member. He died peacefully on 21st January 2018.

Prof. Arneil was a giant of paediatric nephrology. He set up the first regional referral unit for children with renal disease in the UK at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow in 1950. He nurtured generations of paediatric nephrologists and published over 140 scientific papers.

In 1967 he founded and was the first president of the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology, and in 1974 founded and was the first secretary-general of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.

We were privileged that last September he opened the 50th anniversary meeting of ESPN in Glasgow. Our deepest condolences have been sent to his family. He leaves a remarkable legacy for all of us and in our work.
