National shortage of VZIG

Updated guidelines on the use of Varicella zoster immunoglobulin (VZIG) for post exposure prophylaxis have been published in response to a significant shortage of VZIG. VZIG is currently restricted to susceptible contacts exposed in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and neonates. For other high risk contacts including pregnant women exposed from 20 weeks and immunosuppressed individuals, oral antivirals are recommended on the advice of a PHE convened working group.
