The South West Thames Institute for Renal Research
The South West Thames Institute for Renal Research (SWTIRR) is an independent research institute opened in 1998. SWTIRR was created by patients of the Renal Transplant and Dialysis unit of St Helier hospital with the direction of Dr Michael Bending, a senior nephrologist in the unit at the time. St Helier hospital has one of the largest renal patient populations in the south east of England and the local patient groups were keen to establish a research facility that would address areas of renal research that they were interested in.
